This weekend I joined over 300 PHE teachers at HKIS for the second annual APPEC conference. It was great to chat with like-minded educators who believe in the importance and necessity of PE as a front-runner for all learning institutes. The world becomes what we teach, as shared by Ted Tmertzouglou, and the rate at which preventable disease has risen is something that can be easily addressed by embedding a committed culture of physical education in schools. By no means are we talking quick fix, but a fixed goal towards improving and sustaining physical health at an early age needs to become a recognized norm in education. Physical activity, mental health and social engagement encompass a student’s overall wellness and providing a current, relevant and adaptable PE program across the whole school will provide students with the mind and skill set to effectively care for themselves and one another.
The sessions I attended explored pedagogy and curriculum, wellness, specialist themes and technology in PE. The professionalism and organization of this conference was fantastic and appreciated as we (PE teachers) continue to look for avenues to advocate that PE is not just about rolling a ball out to a group of students. I had previously engaged with many of the presenters through Twitter and it was great to finally meet face-to-face and share our ideas and passion for PE! The power of play and a strong presence of PE in schools has the ability to change lives. There are a lot of great things happening in schools and it is conferences like this that inspire us as educators to help the world become what we teach.
